Ignite Your Passion

They say the key is to find out what you’re passionate about and work out how to do that for a living. That’s true happiness. That’s living the dream.

Allow your passion to become your purpose, and one day it will become your profession. ~ Gabrielle Bernstein

But what if turning your passion into your business then turns your love into “work”? What if the challenges of driving a business cause you to lose your fire?

The very nature of running a business is tough, particularly if you’re a mama. Initially there’s a lot of energy and effort for little return as the business builds. Eventually you hope to yield reward, but it takes time, effort and determination…and often a thick skin.

What started out as your creative outlet, and an opportunity to share your passion, can quickly become all about deadlines and outcomes. It’s not hard to start to lose heart, particularly when you’re working around the clock (or around the children) to get it all done.

So, how do you work out what your true passion is or rediscover it if you’ve lost sight?

Firstly, you need to take some time out every now and again. Last week we explored the idea of “taking a break” and this is never more important than when you’re in business. Sometimes you just need to step back and view what you’re doing objectively or from a different angle to get some perspective.

Every now and then it’s good to stop climbing and appreciate the view from right where you are. ~ Lori Deschene

Secondly, take the time to truly explore why it is you’re doing what you’re doing. Sounds obvious really, but it’s amazing how many of us think it would be great to turn our passion into a living and then realise that we don’t love it as much when we have to do it for someone else. Of course this depends on the nature of your business, but it’s worth exploring.

Make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.

Outcome is not in your control. What’s in your control is your effort and your intentions. ~ Amit Sod

How to discover or reignite your passion:
  1. Take the time for quiet contemplation. Allow your mind space without the chaos of life and truly explore what drives you. Meditation is a great way of focusing the mind (we’ve included a great one for this week’s theme)
  2. Try journal writing – get your ideas down on paper so you can see them clearly.
  3. Write yourself an ideal mission statement (particularly if you’re already in business and need to rediscover your passion) Explore whether you are really following it and make some changes.
  4. Try to remember why you started, are you still following the same path. It actually doesn’t matter if you’re not, evolution is inevitable. But are you still staying true to you?
  5. Take a break from what you’re doing. Firstly, you need to break the routine every now and again. Secondly, it’s great to step out and get a view from a different angle. It will give you some perspective.
  6. Do some more training or a course to get you excited again. Sometimes we just need a refresh or a slight change of direction to refuel the fire. Nothing gets me more motivated than attending an awesome workshop or course in yoga ~ it’s a great way to give you fresh ideas.
  7. Explore your business practice – it might not be that you’re losing your passion as such, but just that other areas of the business are beginning to take over.

Essentially, if you’re not truly enjoying what you’re doing then you have to ask yourself if this is really what you are passionate about.

It’s also ok if your passions change, don’t be afraid to change the course you’re on. After all, it’s your life and it’s too short to be spent on anything but what you truly love.
